The European Parliament called on the EU Council to introduce new sanctions against Belarus. They provide for the disconnection of Belarus from SWIFT, as well as a ban on participation in the Tokyo Olympics.

“We call on the EU Council to expand the list of persons and organizations subject to EU sanctions as soon as possible, including those responsible for intercepting and forcibly landing the Ryanair flight, as well as for the arrest of Roman Protasevich and Sofia Sapega,” the draft resolution on the situation with Ryanair emergency landing
The document also called for:
- to impose sanctions on TV journalist Marat Markov, who interviewed the detained Protasevich;
- to enforce the fourth package of sanctions against Belarus;
- introduce sectoral sanctions “affecting the trade in crude oil and oil products, potash, steel and wood processing industries”;
- consider the issue of temporary exclusion of Belarus from the SWIFT system;
- suspend the membership of Belarus in international sports organizations and restrict the country’s national team’s access to international competitions, including the Olympic Games in Tokyo;
- to deprive the Belarusian state television of the right to broadcast matches of the European Football Championship and to transfer these rights to the independent TV channel Belsat free of charge.
