The Castro authorities indicated that the province of Sancti Spíritus has registered 23 fires caused by the explosion of electric motorcycles since the beginning of 2023, a figure that reveals the risks of not implementing the necessary security measures when driving these vehicles. .
According to the head of the province’s Provincial Fire Command, Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Antonio Triana Caturla, the fires caused by these motorinas usually have devastating results in the homes where they occur.
“When the particles that make up the batteries are fragmented, they meet the fuel and that is why the propagation is so fast,” the official explained to the official media Escambray.
In the same way, he indicated that smoke is one of the most dangerous factors when one of these fires breaks out, since it is toxic and fills small rooms quickly.
The official explained that these fires are becoming more frequent, and that the regions where these incidents are most reported are the municipalities of Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad and Cabaiguán.
The lieutenant colonel stressed that these incidents usually have fatal outcomes, noting that a minor recently died in Cabaiguán due to an accident of this type.
He also recommended calling 105 as quickly as possible, and trying to put out the fire with water.
This problem is not registered only in the province of Sancti Spíritussince this means of transport, which represents a viable alternative in the midst of the fuel crisis in Cuba, has gained popularity in recent years in a large part of the Island.
As a consequence, more and more homes have at least one of these means of transport inside, which can represent a risk if the appropriate measures are not applied.
The authorities recalled that it is important to avoid modifying these vehicles, a task that is increasingly difficult on an Island where it is almost impossible to get original spare parts.
Similarly, they recommend that these vehicles not be left charging overnight, as this increases the possibility of damaging the lithium battery. In that sense, it is better for vehicles to be disconnected from direct current once charging is complete.
Another piece of advice that is given is to wait for the battery to cool down before charging, as it reduces the possibility of it overheating. In turn, if it has just been charged, it is recommended to give it a rest time before turning it on and using it.
