MADRID, 20 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, continues on La Palma following the evolution of the volcanic eruption, and maintains for the moment his trip to New York postponed on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly, which was scheduled to begin this Sunday. The Executive’s forecast is that it resumes when the evolution of events allows, according to government sources informed Europa Press.

Sánchez was scheduled to start a busy schedule of meetings on Monday before his speech at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, set for Thursday afternoon.

The Government had given this trip great relevance, as it was the first time that world leaders were going to meet again after the pandemic, since in 2020 the UN General Assembly had to be held mainly telematically.

In addition, Moncloa had prepared an intense agenda from this Monday until Sánchez’s intervention on Thursday. For now, Sánchez has already had to cancel an event with international investors organized by tycoon Michael Bloomberg to promote Spain, with the Recovery Plan as a claim, and bilateral with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson or the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, scheduled for this Monday.

The magnitude of the eruption that took place on Sunday from the Cumbre Vieja volcano, in the municipality of El Paso de La Palma, led Sánchez to change his plans at the last minute and postpone his flight to New York, to travel to the island and follow the evolution of events ‘in situ’.

VISIT TO THE EVACUATED AND TO THE AFFECTED AREAS IN LA PALMA

After spending there on Sunday, the president decided to spend the night on the island and dedicate this Monday to visiting the evacuees and the affected areas, and participating in the meetings of the Steering Committee of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Attention to Emergencies due to volcanic risk ( Pevolca).

The Government’s forecast is that Sánchez will resume his trip to New York soon, if circumstances allow and the situation on La Palma does not worsen. In this way, the sources consulted do not consider it canceled.

The president had planned to start his agenda this Monday by participating in the forum ‘The Climate moment’, organized by the United Kingdom as the host country of the next Conference on climate change, COP26, which will take place in Glasgow in November.

Then he was going to star in a colloquium organized by Bloomberg specifically to talk about the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain; an event that was the result, according to sources from Moncloa, of the meeting between Sánchez and Bloomberg in July in New York, as part of their economic tour of the United States.

After this event, Sánchez had an interview scheduled on Bloomberg TV, before moving on to his afternoon agenda, with bilaterals with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres; with the Emir of Qatar; and with Boris Johnson. You will also not be able to attend the private dinner organized by the investment banking group Goldman Sachs with CEOs of large international firms.

In the agenda designed by the Government before the volcanic eruption, the first appointment that appears for this Tuesday is the participation of Sánchez in the opening of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, which starts at 9:00 local time, 3:00 p.m. in Spain. Your presence will depend on when you decide to resume your trip.

This Tuesday a bilateral meeting with the new president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, and an interview on CNN with the prestigious journalist Christiane Amanpour, at 1:00 p.m. local time – 7:00 p.m. in Spain.
