San Roque: who he was, his prayer and why he is commemorated

This August 16th, as happens year after year, we commemorate San Roque. Learn about his story and why.

Saint Roch was a French pilgrim who lived between the 14th and 15th centuries. He was born in Montpellier, France, and became famous for his devotion to the sick, especially during the plague that ravaged Europe at the time. He apparently traveled around Italy helping those affected by this disease, curing them and giving them comfort. His figure quickly became associated with protection from illness and healing.

Why is he commemorated every August 16?

August 16 is the day of Saint Roch in honor of his life dedicated to the service of others. The Catholic Church canonized him in recognition of his acts of charity and his dedication to the sick. His feast day has become deeply rooted in popular tradition, especially in regions of Europe and Latin America.

The association of Saint Roch with dogs has its origins in a legend. It is said that during his travels, Saint Roch was accompanied by a dog that protected him and brought him food. This canine became his faithful companion and symbol of loyalty. For this reason, Saint Roch is invoked as the protector of animals, especially dogs.
