San Perlita ISD temporarily closes after suspected COVID symptoms among staff

The San Perlita Independent School District announced it will close all three schools for the remainder of the week after “numerous staff members and students” exhibited COVID-like symptoms or tested positive for COVID.

San Perlita Independent School District Superintendent Annette Arredondo said in a news release that the closure is out of an abundance of caution since the three schools are in close proximity and the 55 staff members and 200 students use common facilities throughout the day.

“The start of the school year saw the typical gatherings of large numbers of people, both within the district and outside. This measure has been taken to minimize continued exposure,” Arredondo said in the statement.

Arredondo said district maintenance staff are in the process of deep cleaning and disinfecting all classrooms, offices and transportation fleet.

“At this time, our priority is the health of our staff, students and community,” Arredondo added.

Schools will reopen on Monday, August 26, when all after-school and extracurricular activities will resume.

A decision on recovery days will be made next week.
