San Marino: Are you considering retiring from the Eurovision Song Contest? – Eurovision 2024

Secretary of State of San Marino, Federico Fedini Amati (Federico Pedini Amati), shared his thoughts after the second semi-final held last night, from which San Marino did not qualify for the final for the third time in a row.

In a statement released by Amati, it was stated that in his opinion there is unfairness towards small countries that participate in the competition: “There is something that doesn’t work out for me. Three years in a row we are out of the finals. First Aquila Lauro (Achille Lauro), later Jax commanded (Piqued Jacks) and now Magara (Megara). It almost seems that the small countries are being punished too much. The game can’t just be for big countries”.

The selection of San Marino’s representatives for Eurovision is carried out from 2022 through the pre-Eurovision “Una voce per San Marino”. The government of San Marino claims that it financially contributed uncontrolled amounts to the selection of the singer and the song that will represent San Marino in Eurovision. We emphasize that the final decision regarding participation in the Eurovision is in the hands of the San Marino television network SMRTV, which at this stage has not received any public response.

personal opinion: San Marino’s lack of success is completely glaring, and no doubt the frustration of this small country is completely understandable. Over the years, San Marino did everything to qualify for the final, and in particular an investment was made in directing despite the country’s meager Eurovision budget. On the other hand, the claim that small countries do not succeed in the competition is incorrect – take for example Latvia, which managed to qualify for the final against all odds, as well as Slovenia, a small country in its own right. San Marino itself qualified for the final three times, so they should not give up.

11:11 is the name of the song performed by the band Magara (Megara), which represented San Marino in Eurovision 2024 held in Malmö, Sweden. The band represented San Marino in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2024 but did not qualify for the grand final.

Eurovision 2024: it was San Marino’s 14th participation in Eurovision. San Marino joined the competition in 2008 and achieved its best performance at Eurovision 2019 after the singer Sirhat Finished in 19th place with the song “Say Na Na Na”.
