San Lorenzo vs. Vélez, for the Argentine Cup: goals, summary and controversies

El Fortín celebrated 3-1 in the Libertadores de América with goals from Ordoñez, Romero and debutant Maher Carrizo against El Ciclón, who tied the score with Cuello. A duel of fans, injuries, tears, emotion and controversy in Avellaneda.

Vélez beat San Lorenzo 3-1 on Tuesday at a Libertadores de América Stadium in Avellaneda that was packed with fans due to the unusual presence of both groups and the hostility between them, and made it to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Copa Argentina, where they will face the winner of the match between Independiente and Godoy Cruz.

Gustavo Quinteros’ team looked more successful in the first half when it came to executing their game plan. The influence of an inspired Claudio Aquino was key to taking advantage, while Leandro Romagnoli’s men showed some strength in the middle without being able to exploit it up front, in addition to suffering more due to injuries. Braian Romero warned first and, after 10 minutes, Aquino put a ball into the gap that left Christian Ordoñez one on one with Facundo Altamirano to define to his right.

There were a couple of controversies in favour of Fortín that Fernando Rapallini -without VAR in this tournament- let pass, such as a tackle by Matías Reali on Emanuel Mammana that only earned a yellow card and a run-over in the area by Elián Irala on Ordoñez. Altamirano thwarted an Olympic goal by Aquino and the last image of the first period was that of an injured Malcom Braida in tears after not being able to leave before the break: Pipi did not want to waste another window after the forced exit of Remedi and had no choice but to hold on.

In the second half, Thiago Fernández missed a goal that seemed to start a debacle for Liniers, showing the Azulgrana that they were still alive on the scoreboard. Alexis Cuello responded immediately with a shot that went wide and his team started the best part of the game. Substitutions like Nahuel Barrios’ gave them some breathing room and, in the 16th minute, it was no surprise when Reali entered the area on the left and sent a cross that Cuello headed in a dive to beat Marchiori.

The confusion of Velez and the dominance of Cuervo, who even burned Marchiori’s hands with a low shot from outside by Irala, came to an end with the changes: Matías Pellegrini and Michael Santos made it clear that Quinteros’ men also wanted more and the match became more even. At 37, Michael Santos, who seemed to be ahead by a nail, classily passed to Braian Romero on the left, who shot to the second post for the second.

As the icing on the cake, during five minutes of added time (in the 47th minute) and with the Azulgrana on the attack, Pellegrini ran over Daniel Herrera on the left and sent in the cross that 18-year-old debutant Maher Carrizo pushed in for the third. The party exploded on Vélez’s side in a night of emotions to the limit.
