San Lorenzo showed a new – and better – face against Atlético Mineiro but the victory escaped them and ended in a 1-1 draw at the Pedro Bidegain Stadium, for the first leg of the round of 16 of the 2024 Copa Libertadores.
The Blaugrana team, with Leandro Romagnoli as coach after being convinced following his resignation, and in the midst of a managerial crisis, took the lead thanks to a goal by Alexis Cuello but Paulinho leveled the series after an error by Facundo Altamirano. The passage to the quarterfinals will be decided in Belo Horizonte.
After a very tough week where they were eliminated from the Copa Argentina and lost agonizingly to Atlético Tucumán, the Gauchos from Boedo improved considerably and missed out on victory against one of the top candidates -on paper- to fight for the top tournament at the continental level. From the beginning, the home team was seen to be firm in their own half and with a high enough pressure to bother the opponent at the start of their offensive actions, which is how they opened the scoring. Matías Reali pressed, recovered and sent a perfect cross to the penalty spot that Cuello converted into a goal to unleash the madness of Pedro Bidegain.
Even with the initial advantage, Romagnoli’s team was closer to extending their lead than Milito’s team was to leveling the score, but that offensive inefficiency weighed again and a new error by Altamirano allowed the visitors to get an undeserved equaliser in only their second risky chance and the first of the second half. After receiving a back-to-back at the edge of the area from a full-back, Fausto Vera took a shot that the ex-Banfield and Patronato player not only controlled in his attempt to pocket and left a long rebound that Paulinho did not forgive to decree the first partial and eventually definitive 1-1.
There was no time for more and the match ended in a 1-1 draw between Cuervo and Galo, a result that leaves the series open for the return match, this coming Tuesday, August 20 at the MRV Arena in Belo Horizonte, where one of the two will punch its ticket to the quarterfinals and the other will be left behind. Whoever wins the match will advance to the next phase and in case of a tie (whatever the score in that result), the story will be decided in a penalty shootout without extra time.
