The San Francisco cemetery becomes the stage for another year to pay homage to the retaliated republicans after the Franco uprising. This Sunday morning, members of different social and political groups participated in this event organized by Amigos da República. An act that also marked the closure of the activities organized by the association throughout the week to commemorate the anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic.
In addition to reading one by one the names of the one hundred and fifty Republicans who lost their lives “for defending legality and having the only crime of thinking differently”, the tricolor flag was displayed and the folk group Os Fedellos de Loiro played a series of pieces . For his part, the president of Amigos da República, David Simón wanted to place special emphasis on defend republican values “At a time when we are seeing how fascism does not stop growing and how in areas of our country it already has power.” He also recalled the importance of making this offering to commemorate the people from Ourense who were shot in the Campo de Aragón (name given to the current San Francisco cemetery) and in the Cuartel del Cumial de Ourense, since “they are the symbol of the thousands of executed by the Franco regime throughout the Spanish State”. Finally, I emphasize that thousands of people “suffered a Francoist genocide whose objective was to erase any idea that had the objective of recovering democratic life.”
