San Francisco Airport begins modernization of its Terminal 3 West

It aims to obtain LEED Platinum certification for its sustainability features such as efficient use of energy, recycled water and ecological materials.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has launched the Terminal 3 West modernization project, a $2.6 billion construction project that will renovate the 650,000-square-foot western half of Terminal 3, including a seismic retrofit, an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities.

The project will also create 200,000 square feet of additional space, allowing for expanded food, beverage and retail concessions. The expanded section is expected to open in the fall of 2027.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said that for millions of people around the world, SFO creates their first impression of the San Francisco Bay Area.

“We want our residents to be proud of their hometown airport and for visitors to experience what makes our region great the moment they step off a plane. This Terminal 3 West modernization project is another important step that will ensure SFO continues to reflect the innovation, sustainability and diversity that make San Francisco such an amazing place,” he added.

For his part, Airport Director Ivar Satero commented that his goal is to create an extraordinary airport experience for our guests, leading the way in sustainability and innovation, “We hope that this project will once again raise the level of what travelers can expect at SFO.”

The Terminal 3 modernization project will create a new exterior façade that will welcome travelers at the curb, more check-in space, including a state-of-the-art baggage drop, and new security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine for AirTrain passengers.

For arriving international passengers, direct access will be provided to the Customs Hall located in the International Terminal through a new sterile Federal Inspection Service (FIS) connector.

The project also includes a new six-story building that will house both airline lounges and operational office space. The renovated and expanded western half is expected to open in fall 2027, with the six-story building opening in early 2028.

A renovated check-in hall at the east end of Terminal 3 is expected to open in early 2029.

During construction, a temporary walkway will allow passengers to traverse various terminals and boarding areas around the project site. This temporary walkway, comprised of 11 sections currently being fabricated, will be open for the 2024 holiday travel season.

SFO is pursuing LEED Platinum certification for this project. Sustainability features will include daylight harvesting, displacement ventilation, on-site photovoltaics, waste heat recovery, low-carbon steel and concrete, energy-efficient baggage handling, dynamic glazing, recycled water, hydration stations, health-friendly materials, and green building education.

At its peak, the project is expected to employ between 500 and 600 workers and aims to award contracts worth more than $173 million to local business enterprises (LBEs).
