The first day of exchange of community experiences of participation in health was held at the San Antonio Cultural Center, an event led by the Valparaíso-San Antonio Health Service (SSVSA) and the Litoral Community Mental Health Center. The event brought together various institutions and social organizations in the province with the aim of sharing community experiences in mental health care.
Gabriel Velastegui Monsalve, head of the Public Management Subdepartment of the SSVSA, highlighted that this activity seeks to become a recurring meeting space.
“We had other more academic initiatives, but the idea here was to create a meeting point for the community to share how they take care of themselves. When the care in the cesfam or in the hospitals ends, it is the community that continues with these initiatives of mutual care, which today we are celebrating and sharing,” he noted.
During the day, various experiences developed in locations such as Navidad and Cartagena were presented, evidencing the potential to replicate these initiatives in other territories. According to Velastegui, “there are many initiatives worth replicating. What happens in Valparaíso can be implemented here and vice versa. In addition, it is important to highlight community work in rural posts, which often remains in the background.”
One of the highlights of the meeting was the greeting sent from Juan Fernández Island, where a representative of the community radio thanked the possibility of accessing ministerial funds that allow promoting activities to promote mental health.
He explained that community initiatives are financed annually through the Good Practices Program to Promote Citizen Participation, of the Ministry of Health. This program allows civil society organizations, in collaboration with their health centers, to apply for projects that strengthen community care and participation.
“All civil society organizations linked to health establishments can participate. This includes local health councils, indigenous peoples’ organizations and groups working on mental health. This year, we have seen how the call has diversified, which allows for broader and more enriching work together with the cesfam,” he added.
There were a total of 20 exhibition modules in which the territories shared their community experiences in health with the attending community, promoting the exchange of learning and strengthening collective work. Among those attending were schools, community representatives, users, caregivers and family members, who enriched the day with their perspectives and experiences.
