Samsung’s pendant promises centimeter-level localization; but where does AirTag belong?

  • Samsung is preparing a new generation localization tag
  • It will be equipped with a new UWB chip with centimeter accuracy of localization

In 2021, Samsung introduced the Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag+ location tags, which made it easier for users to find lost items with high accuracy. This year we will probably see a new generation, the arrival of which is indicated by the recent premiere of the Samsung Exynos Connect U100 chip.

The novelty is supposed to represent a complete localization and communication solution, which is built on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and UWB (ultra wide-band) technologies. Compared to the original chip in the existing SmartTag labels, this is a completely new single-purpose circuit that boasts a small size, high accuracy and also high efficiency.

Samsung SmartTag review: the digital Sherlock Holmes

Exynos Connect U100 promises accuracy in units of centimeters, angular accuracy should fit within 5 degrees. Thanks to this, it should find application in AR/VR applications requiring accurate tracking of objects and people in real time. However, thanks to compatibility with Digital Key Release 3.0 from the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), it will be possible to use it in the digital keys of modern cars, and it is also expected to be deployed in mobile devices or Internet of Things devices.

At the moment, it is not clear in which devices Samsung will deploy its UWB chip, the second generation SmartTag is being considered, which is expected in the summer together with the flexible Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 smartphones.
