Samsung plans to launch its first GEMS Hip exoskeleton, a “wearable” assistive robot that will help people with reduced mobility walk, in August.
Samsung was already making eyes at us with its advancements in 6G connectivity, although from Suwon they want to keep people talking in their brightest year ever, now timing the launch of this which will be their next big electronic project presented in 2020 in Las Vegas.
It’s called GEMS Hip Assistive Robot and yes, it’s one of those exoskeletons that promises to revolutionize our future by assisting us in our daily tasks or transforming us into “super-humans” with more strength, more speed or a better balance.
Samsung’s idea, in fact, as our colleagues from SamMobile told us, is that this GEMS Hip becomes our walking or running assistance robot, since the South Korean mechanical monstrosity is able reducing the metabolic cost of walking by 24%, also accelerating our speed by 14%.
It would therefore be a first step – never better said – for this type of device to also become the prosthesis of the new era, helping people with reduced mobility to walk, carry or grab things for people without upper limbs or even to open up the fan of possible jobs to people who have back problems or the like.
In the electronics and mobile phone industry, Samsung shines brighter than ever
As we mentioned, Samsung’s new exoskeleton was presented at CES 2020 and after finishing its development, it points to the American market as a launcher, since it seems that this robotics sector has grown by 21% per year since 2016 and has a long way to go yet as an emerging company.
At this stage, nothing surprising, since we already know the Suwon company and its desire to be everywhere, always at the forefront, to open markets and to propose solutions (sometimes even to problems that we didn’t) within this consumer electronics industry.
This will not be the case, since these exoskeletons are certainly the hope of many people, so we are happy to see progress, especially in health-oriented implementations, such as the case of this Samsung GEMS Hip, which is currently awaiting release. US FDA approval precisely because of the need to register it as a medical device.
Samsung already has ISO 1372 certification and is now awaiting FDA approval to launch sales of its first exoskeleton, this GEMS Hip, which could already help people with reduced mobility walk in the coming month of August.
The nomenclature, in case you were wondering, comes from the acronym for “Gait Enhancing & Motivating System”, which in Spanish is something like “Motivation and Gait Improvement System”, so you already understand where they will go. of the device oriented as a tool for people with reduced mobility or with motor disabilities.
Unfortunately, few details have emerged on the possibilities of the GEMS Hip, beyond the fact that Samsung has obtained the ISO 1372 certificate for the device and that it intends to sell it, if it receives the authorization. from the FDA, starting next August. We also don’t know its price, but sources tell us that around 50,000 units will be made in the first batch.
