Samsung’s Impressive New High-Resolution Photo Sensors: Up to 440 Megapixels

The new photo sensors from Samsung are supposed to impress with their high resolution
The ISOCELL HU1 is said to have 440 megapixels
Series production will start next year

Samsung does not only manufacture smartphones themselves, but also many of their components, which it also provides to its competitors. It is most active in the field of chips, displays, memories and cameras, and in all cases it has technologies for the most demanding customers in its portfolio. The division in charge of developing photochips is said to be currently working on new sensors that could be included in selected smartphones in the coming years.

Up to 440 megapixels in the phone

Informant Revegnus claims that the Korean firm is developing new ISOCELL sensors, some even with unexpectedly high resolution. In the second half of next year, the following models should enter serial production:

ISOCELL HP7 with 200 megapixel resolution (pixel size 0.6 μm) ISOCELL GN6 with 50 megapixel resolution (pixel size 1.6 μm) ISOCELL HU1 with 440 megapixel resolution

In addition to them, the Koreans are said to be working on a 320 Mpx sensor, the name of which we do not yet know, but there is speculation about its use in the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra smartphone, which is still two and a half years away from its premiere. And in which smartphones does Samsung want to deploy the other developing chips?

The situation here is still unclear. The ISOCELL HP7 was said to be intended for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, but Samsung canceled that route due to high costs. However, since it is still counting on its serial production, it will probably be used by competitors. The same apparently applies to the 50Mpx ISOCELL GN6 – which, according to Revegnus, will find favor with Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Apparently, it will be a sensor with a physical size of 1″, which will be a competitor to the Sony IMX989.

And when can we look forward to the 400Mpx ISOCELL HU1? Surprisingly, we do not know any details about it, even though it is supposed to go into production next year. Its production will probably be even more expensive than in the case of 200Mpx sensors, so again it is possible that Samsung will offer it to a competitor who can market 440 megapixels.
