Samsung will be the first to use a Gorilla Glass camera

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Glass producing company, Corning has just announced the presence of two Gorilla Glass products to protect smartphone camera lenses. Reportedly Samsung became the first customer to use the new product.

Corning introduces products with DX and DX+ technology. With this technology, it will be able to capture 98% of light, the company said.

In the announcement, Corning also said “Samsung is the first customer to adopt the Gorilla Glass DX product for camera lens covers”, as quoted from Tech Radar, Friday (23/7/2021).

Unfortunately there is no information on what Samsung devices will use the protector from Corning. It is possible that it can be used on premium-class devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 are reportedly Samsung’s product lines that will be launched in the near future. WinFuture reported earlier this month that the South Korean tech giant had already started mass production of components on the Z Fold 3 and that means the product launch could be in about two or three months.

If this news is true, then the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be released in August in the Unpacked Event. The phone will share the stage with the Z Flip 3 at the event.

For information, the previous DX technology is not new and it’s not just glass. Gorilla Glass DX is a composite material.

For the first time the product was used on the Samsung Galaxy Watch in 2018, but the technology has not been perfected specifically for the camera application.

To change that, Corning had to overcome the problem of improving the scratch resistance and durability of its glass composites. Plus it has no negative impact on optical performance, due to the side effect of having a transparent material to protect the camera.

Improved scratch resistance usually results in clear sacrificial optics and the scratch itself. So this Corning product is a technology with a two-way solution that ensures higher image quality for smartphone photographers.
