Samsung wants to put the front cameras under the screen of its next smartphones

Samsung recently patented an innovative under-display camera (UDC) technology based on an optical sensor. This advancement aims to address persistent issues plaguing current implementations.

Samsung has been at the forefront of under-display camera technology with its Galaxy Z Fold series. However, like other manufacturers, the tech giant has struggled with image quality and screen distortion issues inherent to UDCs. With a new patent, Samsung is looking to address these issues head on, promising both better image quality and better camouflage of the sensor area.

The patented system uses an intelligent approach to improve the performance of the UDC. At the heart of this system is a dedicated display driver IC that dynamically adjusts the image output in the sensor area based on luminance and dimming settings. This real-time adjustment allows the system to turn off pixels or display an image that minimizes visual distortion, effectively concealing the presence of the camera.

Samsung still believes in under-display cameras

Interestingly, Samsung’s patent sketches show the technology on the external display of a Z Fold-like device. This suggests that the company is exploring ways to eliminate the punch-hole visible on the cover display. So its removal could finally be deliver a true full-screen experience on both the inner and outer displays of future foldable devices.

Although companies like Nubia have made strides in implementing UDC with their flagship Z series, image quality remains a significant hurdle. Samsung’s current under-display cameras, featuring a modest 4MP sensor, lag behind the competition.

It’s worth noting that the patent specifically mentions applications for foldable and rollable devices, so Samsung may be prioritizing these advancements for its more expensive smartphones rather than immediately incorporating the technology into its mainstream Galaxy S or A series. Whether or not the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is expected to arrive this summer, will feature this technology remains to be seen.
