Samsung Unveils Rollable and Sensor OLED Displays at SID Display Week 2023

Samsung brought next-generation display technologies to the SID Display Week 2023 event, which started today in Los Angeles. The first novelty is the Rollable Flex display, which is a rollable display that can be used in tablets or laptops, and the second is the Sensor OLED display. That is, the display panel, which includes a fingerprint reader that works on the entire surface, and a blood pressure sensor. Another specimen on display is a phone with a display that bends to one side and to the other. Just the way you need it.

Display Rollable Flex is the star of Samsung’s booth at the Display Week event. It is a 12.4″ panel that can stretch from 49 mm to a length of 254.4 mm, i.e. five times. Samsung helped itself by hiding the display “in a roll” when closed. However, we cannot yet imagine its practical use , because the whole device should be scrolled outside the display, and that doesn’t seem very realistic to us yet.

The closest to the final product is the Flex In & Out concept. This is practically a Z Fold4 without an external display. If you need to work with the phone in the closed state, simply turn it “upside down”

The concept of folding equipment looks much more realistic Flex In & Out. On display at the booth is a physical prototype that resembles the Galaxy Z Fold4, but there is one big difference. This phone does not have an external display. If you want to use it in the closed state, just flip it to the opposite side. The folding device boasts a 360° hinge, and with this Samsung has effectively solved the problem of devices that fold “out” and risk scratching the display surfaces when carrying them when closed.

If you want to work with the jigsaw in the closed state, you fold the displays so that they are on the outside of the phone, i.e. on the front and back. If you want to protect the display of the puzzle in the closed state, just fold it “upside down”. And this very piece of mobile technology was shown in a functional device at the Display Week event, but the question is whether Samsung will want to bring it to market. After all, it is not clear how durable a foldable display that will bend 360 degrees would have. For standard jigsaws, Samsung gives businesses 200,000 folds.

Mobile devices could soon appreciate the new panel as well Sensor OLED Display. It is a display whose integral part is a fingerprint reader right from the factory. While previously manufacturers had to place separate readers under the display, in the case of the new display it is already integrated. More importantly, this reader works on the entire viewing area of the display! By touching two fingers anywhere on the display, you can also start measuring heart rate, blood pressure and stress level. This is the very first display of its kind in the world. Even regarding its possible commercial deployment, Samsung has not provided any further details yet.
