Samsung Unveils Next-Gen Neo QLED and OLED TVs, Featuring Revolutionary AI Screens and Advanced Technology

At a pre-CES 2024 event in Las Vegas, USA, Samsung presented its new generation of TVs to the world, which are now no longer simply smart TVs, but “artificial intelligence screens” or “AI Screens”. The Korean brand coined this new term due to the implementation of the NQ8 AI Gen3 chip in this year’s Neo QLED 8K and 4K line, capable of running 8 times more neural networks than its predecessor and which has an NPU (neural processing unit) 2 times more powerful.

As a result, the brand’s new QLED TVs are now packed with intelligent software features that aim to change the user’s relationship with the main screen in their home.

“The TV processor has always been an important point in the development of the TV”, according to Guilherme Campos, product manager for TVs at Samsung Brazil. “It’s just never been talked about with as much intensity as you saw here today. The screen is achieving such great imaging, brightness and contrast capabilities — and this is thanks to the processor — that Samsung leaders decided to talk more intensely about the chip,” he concluded.

The new chip and its AI capabilities are Samsung’s greatest asset for a year without major news in screen technology. All the main features of the Neo QLED 2024 revolve around what the processor can do. This ranges from “AI Motion Enhancer Pro” — which detects the type of sports broadcast being consumed to eliminate distortion from fast-moving targets like tennis balls, footballs and hockey pucks — to the brand’s new upscaling technology, which transforms low-resolution video into content up to 8K.

Although there are still few series and films in native 8K to consume via streaming, Campos is optimistic about the standard. “Every year some provider releases some content in 8K, like Lord of the Rings from Prime Video last year, which had a 25-minute trailer in 8K released. So as TV is already capable of supporting the encore of files of this complexity coming from the cloud, providers are increasingly moving to make this happen,” he reported.

In addition to the processor, the most tangible hardware improvement in Samsung’s new TVs is the thinner screen design — 12.9 mm thick — and no protrusions on the back. Samsung calls this “Infinity Air Design”.

The Tizen operating system also received another upgrade to its interface with visual improvements and now brings the possibility of creating user profiles on the TV. The idea is that each member of a family can create their profile to receive content recommendations that match their tastes. So, if your young children are obsessed with Galinha Pintadinha or Pepa Pig, you won’t have to deal with a barrage of children’s content being suggested on the living room TV every day. Korean free TV streaming service Samsung TV Plus also received a major redesign of its interface.

Another new software feature is Samsung Daily+, which works as a hub for daily activities that you can track on your TV. This includes physical activity management and even a tool for your furry children called “Dr. Tail”, which allows you to chat live with veterinarians to learn how to better care for pets.

Despite all this, perhaps the best feature that demonstrates the firepower of the NQ8 AI Gen3 chip is the Voice Guide for Subtitles”, capable of dubbing foreign language content in real time, but which have subtitles.

New OLED line 2024

For this year’s OLED line, Samsung brought very interesting improvements in terms of image. This year’s TVs can achieve brightness up to 20% higher than those in the past, according to the brand. Colors are AI-calibrated with deep blacks and Pantone Validated™ certification.

The new OLED TVs (S95D, S90D, S85D) will reach the international and Brazilian market in sizes ranging from 42 inches to 83 inches and versions with and without OLED Glare Free treatment, which reduces reflections on the display.

Samsung also presented a transparent TV concept with a MICRO LED screen that would have the most interesting application of providing a “three-dimensional layer” for content being transmitted on another display further back. The effect is very interesting when seen in person, but camera images don’t do the technology justice. The novelty, however, is not yet a final product.

Price and availability

Samsung has not yet spoken about the price of any of the new products presented today in Las Vegas, but it made it clear that many models should arrive in Brazil in the coming months. This includes varying sizes of the Neo QLED 2024 line and also OLED screens with and without anti-glare treatment.
