It is a chip to which the 5 nano (nm) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process is applied, and is implemented as a 5G modem integrated chip for the first time as its own premium mobile AP. It is expected to be installed in the Galaxy S21, which is currently in mass production and is scheduled to be released.
Samsung Electronics announced that it has significantly improved performance through design optimization in cooperation with ARM, a semiconductor design asset (IP) company.
By adopting a Tri-Cluster structure with one high-performance Cortex-X1 running at up to 2.9 GHz, three A78, and four low-power A55s, the performance of the previous generation has increased by 30%. This is the company’s explanation.
As the GPU is equipped with Mali-G78, the graphics performance is improved by more than 40% compared to the previous generation model.
The on-device AI function was enhanced. Samsung Electronics emphasized that it has secured more than 26 TOPS AI computation performance by integrating the 3rd generation neural network processor (NPU) and accelerator IP that excludes unnecessary computation.
It is explained that advanced AI calculation is possible on the terminal itself without exchanging data with the cloud server, so that unnecessary information does not need to come and go even in the implementation of highly utilized personalization services, thus protecting personal information and stably implementing the service.
In-Yup Kang, President of System LSI Division of Samsung Electronics, emphasized, “The Exynos 2100 is equipped with a state-of-the-art EUV process and the latest design technology to achieve more powerful performance and improved AI functions than the previous model.”
It also has a built-in high-performance image processor (ISP) that can process up to 200 million pixel images. It is also possible to connect up to 6 image sensors and drive 4 image sensors at the same time.
It also supports a dynamic shooting function using images and videos input through various angles of view image sensors such as wide-angle and telephoto.
Meanwhile, as the 5G modem is integrated into one chip, it supports all 5G networks with a single chip, thus reducing the area occupied by parts and enhancing the design convenience of the device. It supports all major frequencies such as sub-6 and mmWave while responding to various communication environments.
As finer process technology was applied, power efficiency was also improved. The management explained that the power required for AI calculation was also reduced by half as the 5-nano EUV process, which is up to 20% improved compared to 7-nano, was applied.
Another feature is that it is equipped with AMIGO (Advanced Multi-IP Governor), developed by itself for power efficiency optimization.
In the industry, it is evaluated that the specifications of the Exynos 2100 released this time and the competitiveness of process technology have improved significantly compared to the previous work.
The Exynos 990, which was applied with the previous 7-nano process, was confused by performance and heat problems compared to the rival Snapdragon 865. Exynos’ share also fell sharply from 16% in the third quarter of 2019 to 12% in the third quarter of 2020.
Yooak Park, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said, “Exynos 2100 is expected to show the same performance as the rival Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 by using the EUV 5-nano process and ARM reference core.” It is expected that the market share of the Exynos 2100, which has been preceded, is expected to increase.”
