Samsung to unveil advanced sub-screen camera in smartphones in 2021

Samsung was the first to publicly announce that it is investigating the possibility of moving the front camera under the display, however, the company has not yet released such a solution. The Korean manufacturer has already been outstripped by Chinese competitors like ZTE and Xiaomi. However, there may be a good reason for the delay.

According to a tweet from an informant Ice Universe, Samsung will have its own turnkey solution in 2021, and it could appear as early as the Galaxy S21. The tweet claims that Samsung has advanced technology for such a camera, but has more stringent quality requirements, so it took longer than competitors to bring its solution to market.

One of the problems that sub-screen cameras cause is the quality of the images. Since the lens has to capture the image through an additional layer of the screen, this obviously reduces the amount of light entering the matrix and can lead to other artifacts. Therefore, it is not enough to simply place the camera under the display.

We have not yet seen a solution to this problem from ZTE or Xiaomi and therefore are not sure how successfully these companies managed to overcome these problems. And before the launch of Samsung devices, it is all the more early to talk about the superiority of the Korean company’s approach. But let’s hope that in fact, screen cutouts will soon become history.
