Samsung to spend $ 17 billion to build new US chip factory

Samsung on Wednesday announced an investment estimated at $ 17 billion in the United States to build a new semiconductor manufacturing plant that will produce logic chips.

The new plant, which will be built in Taylor, Texas, will manufacture chips for mobile, 5G, AI and high-performance computing applications, the South Korean tech giant said. The manufacturing capacity of the new facility would help stabilize the global semiconductor supply chain, Kinam Kim, vice president and CEO of Samsung’s chip business, said in a statement.

“In addition to our partners in Texas, we are grateful to the Biden administration for creating an environment that supports companies like Samsung in their efforts to develop advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the United States,” added Mr. Kim. “We also thank the administration and Congress for their bipartisan support for the early promulgation of federal incentives for domestic chip production and innovation.”

Over 5 million square meters

Construction of the new plant, which will span over 5 million square meters, will begin in the first half of 2022 and Samsung aims to start operations in the second half of 2024.

Samsung’s estimated $ 17 billion to build the new plant will be Samsung’s largest investment in the United States, the company said. Since Samsung began operating in the United States in 1978, the company has spent more than $ 47 billion.

In addition to the new factory, a skills center will also be built in Taylor to help students develop their skills and provide recruiting opportunities as part of this investment.

2,000 new direct jobs

According to Samsung, the decision to build the factory in Taylor was made after reviewing several sites in the United States, due to the local semiconductor ecosystem, the stability of the infrastructure, the support of the local government. and opportunities for community development.

The new plant will also be close to Samsung’s existing plant in Austin, about 25 km southwest of Taylor, allowing the two plants to share the necessary infrastructure and resources, the company said.

Samsung said the new factory is expected to create more than 2,000 new direct jobs. The South Korean tech giant currently has around 20,000 employees in the United States.
