Samsung Takes Strategic Steps to Produce Ultra-Thin Devices and Increase Competition

Samsung reportedly has two companies produce ultra-thin devices
The aim is to save costs and increase competition
Next year we could expect a cheaper clamshell

Sales of Samsung’s flexible smartphones are growing every year, although compared to conventional production, the numbers are still significantly lower. Two factors in particular discourage their purchase – lower durability and higher price. Samsung wants to actively fight both factors.

Thin glasses from several companies

According to the informant, Revengus, Samsung has made a strategic decision in recent days – it will purchase ultra-thin glass for flexible displays from two manufacturers, one of which will be Corning. It is known in the world of smartphones mainly thanks to its durable Gorilla Glass. From this strategy, the Koreans hope to reduce the price of flexible displays, which is the largest item in the total cost of manufacturing a flexible phone – it accounts for up to 40 percent of the total price.

A bet on more manufacturers can not only bring a reduction in price, but can also start a technological race for the most durable flexible glass. Thanks to healthy competition, the two biggest pain points of flexible phones could be gradually eliminated, which would undoubtedly be reflected in increased sales. This year, Samsung plans to sell up to 15 million jigsaw puzzles.

In addition, Samsung is said to be looking at cost savings elsewhere, with even speculation that it’s planning a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip FE flagship for next year. So far, the Korean giant has only offered flexible phones with flagship chipsets and high-end equipment, but there is undoubtedly room in the market for a flexible middle class.

Samsung recently introduced a new generation of flexible smartphones, consisting of the book-like Galaxy Z Fold 5 and clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 5. Both models are an evolution of their predecessors, equipped with more powerful and efficient chipsets, thinner construction and better cameras, and the Galaxy Z Flip is also significantly improved the size of the front display. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 costs 44,990 crowns including VAT on the Czech market, while the Z Flip 5 will cost 28,490 crowns including VAT.
