The Wall Street Journal of the United States (WSJ) reported on the 22nd (local time) that Samsung Electronics is considering building semiconductor factories in Arizona, Texas, or New York State by investing up to 17 billion dollars (about 18 trillion won).

The WSJ quoted an insider familiar with the matter, saying, “We have two in mind for the site of the new semiconductor plant, near Phoenix in Arizona and Austin in Texas, and an industrial complex in Genesh County in western New York.”

The official told WSJ that “an important variable in the investment plan depends on what incentives the US federal government will offer.”

Earlier on the same day (local time), Bloomberg News reported that Samsung Electronics is considering building a semiconductor plant by investing more than 10 billion dollars (about 11 trillion won) in Texas (Austin).

Since then, the WSJ report predicted that Samsung Electronics’ investment, reported by Bloomberg, could increase by more than 7 trillion won, and the industry’s attention is drawing on the actual investment size of Samsung Electronics.

If Samsung Electronics confirms this plan, foundry competitors will clash between TSMC in Taiwan and the US mainland. TSMC is constructing a plant for a 5nm or less process in Arizona, US, with a goal of operating in 2023, spending 12 billion dollars (about 13 trillion won).
