Samsung smartphones get AMD GPU with support for ray tracing and VRS – Tablets and phones – News

I don’t quite agree. The ‘cheat’ techniques are indeed played out, but far from optimal. Current solutions produce a lot of graphical glitches that every gamer takes for granted. Although you may not immediately see the step to games with ray tracing, as you play more games with ray tracing, you will notice the step to games without ray tracing faster.
I recently played Horizons Zero Down and things that immediately struck me was that reflections from the water just disappear, especially on the sides of the screen. This is something that almost every game with screen space reflections suffers from. There is also some flickering in the shadows here and there. A disadvantage of the shadows maps, there are many parameters for shadows maps that you have to tweak per scene to fix all these mistakes. Now ray tracing also has drawbacks, such as noise. But it is usually not scene dependent and there are already many solutions for it.

I think the biggest advantage of ray tracing is that it ultimately makes game development easier. It takes a lot of man-hours to make the reflections and shadows look good, all of this can later be put into other things like making more content, or better animations. I say ultimately because at this point a game both with and without ray tracing should work well. If you get ‘ray-tracing only’ games in the future you will really notice the difference. That is why it is good to have ray tracing on the phones and tablets, the more systems have ray tracing hardware, the faster the game developers can switch to this technique.
