Samsung shipped 72 million smartphones in the first quarter

Samsung shipped an estimated 72 million smartphones in the first quarter, down about 11 percent from a year earlier, mainly due to a later-than-usual availability of its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S22.

The Galaxy S22 series sold about 50 percent more in the first week after launch at the end of February than the previous model S21.

Samsung is estimated to have shipped just over 6 million units of the S22 series by the end of March, in line with expectations.

The company made Thursday morning preliminary quarterly figures known. Profits increased to $11.6 billion.

Although memory chip prices declined in the first quarter, data center customer demand remained solid.

The chipmaker also likely benefited from a disruption at a rival NAND Flash chip factory owned by Japan’s Kioxia and US company Western Digital due to raw material contamination.

Samsung will publish detailed quarterly results on April 28.
