The 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO Golden Glove Awards, held december 13th in Seoul, South Korea, celebrated the best defensive players in the Korean Baseball Association (KBO). While the KIA Tigers led the way with the moast overall winners, the Samsung Lions made a significant impact, securing two coveted Golden Gloves.
The Samsung Lions’ outfield star,Ja-wook koo,emerged as a standout performer,capturing the outfield Golden Glove with a landslide victory. His extraordinary performance, including a batting average in the mid-.300s, a career-high 30 home runs, and 115 RBIs, solidified his place as a top contender. This marks Koo’s third Golden Glove win, adding to his previous victories in 2021 and 2023. His 260 votes represented a commanding 90.3% of the total votes cast in the outfield category.
Adding to the Lions’ success, Kang Min-ho claimed the catcher’s Golden Glove in a highly competitive race. With a .300 batting average and 19 home runs, Kang secured his seventh Golden Glove award, outpacing his closest competitor by over 100 votes. His consistent excellence behind the plate underscores his enduring impact on the game.
The awards weren’t without their close calls.Pitcher Won Tae-in, despite a strong season, fell short in his bid for a golden Glove, receiving only 28.1% of the votes.However, his contributions were recognized with the Fair Play Award, a testament to his sportsmanship and dedication.
The KIA Tigers dominated the overall awards, securing three golden Gloves. Their winners included third baseman Kim Do-young, shortstop Park Chan-ho, and designated hitter Choi Hyeong-woo, who received the most votes overall. This impressive showing highlights the Tigers’ overall team strength and individual excellence.
Interestingly, teams that advanced to the postseason, including the Doosan Bears, SSG Landers, and Hanwha Eagles, failed to secure any Golden Glove awards. The remaining teams each earned a single award, underscoring the competitive nature of the KBO and the exceptional talent recognized this year.
Looking ahead, the Samsung Lions, buoyed by their strong showing in both team performance and individual awards, will begin their preparations for the 2025 season in Okinawa, Japan, at the end of January. Dr. Kim: That’s a great question. Notably, this year no teams that reached the postseason secured any Golden Glove awards. It highlights that while individual excellence is celebrated, the KBO is a league where team chemistry and overall performance are crucial.
