SCREEN Animated, unfolding organic LED (OLED) may remind some of the Wizarding world’s Daily Prophet newspaper of Harry Potter.
Samsung Display revealed their Rollable Flex concept this week, a monitor that can be rolled up and unfolded like a roll, or a small yoga mat.
The device can be rolled up to approximately 2 inches (49 mm) and rolled to a maximum vertical length of 10 inches (254.4 mm) — five times its storage height.
Screens that could fold or slide in the past were only able to offer three times the scalability as a form factor.
With Rollable Flex, Samsung hopes to help consumers by making larger devices such as laptops, tablets and displays smaller and easier to carry.
The company says the device’s secret is its carefully engineered O-shaped axis, around which the screen wraps around like the world’s most expensive toilet paper.
“We can turn a large screen that is difficult to carry into a portable form factor,” said Samsung Display, as reported at dailymail.com, Saturday (27/5/2023).
“By making it rollable.”
But the Rollable Flex is not the first scrollable screen on the market. Other companies have ventured into this space before, including South Korean flat-screen TV maker LG, which wowed CES for years with its rollable 65-inch TV concept masterpiece.
After two years of teasing at trade shows, LG’s definition of 8K, rollable Signature OLED R television is finally hitting the market in South Korea, with a stunning retail price of $87,000.
Samsung showcased Rollable Flex for the first time this week, along with a number of other new bendable technologies during SID Display Week 2023, an industry fair in Los Angeles.
Samsung Display also unveiled new foldable prototypes, the Flex In & Out, which can fold in and out 360 degrees, and the Flex Hybrid, which combines folding and sliding technologies.
No word on when Samsung will make their Rollable Flex screen available to consumers, but promise that they will let the good times roll soon. (red)
