Samsung remains (despite the crisis) the world number 1 smartphone in the first quarter of 2020

The coronavirus crisis has hurt tech builders a lot. She not only caused delays in the exit of certain flagships, but by significantly slowing economic activity, it reduced demand for smartphones. It is therefore not surprising to see the sales figures for these devices decline in the first quarter of 2020. A trend that can be observed in the latest report from the firm Strategy Analytics, but which does not, however, upset the hierarchy of manufacturers, which remains as always dominated by the Korean giant Samsung.

Smartphone sales – 1st quarter 2020

Indeed, although having recorded the largest drop in sales among the 5 main manufacturers (-19% compared to the first quarter 2019), Samsung is still well ahead of Huawei, which must also manage the American sanctions weighing on the sales of its new phones, like Huawei P40. Note that if Samsung and Huawei maintain their market share at about the same level as last year, Apple (going from 13 to 14.3%) and Xiaomi (from 8.3 to 10%) improve their position thanks to sales falling much less than those of their competitors. It remains to be seen whether Samsung will be able to reverse the trend in the coming months by relying on Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2, expected next August.
