Samsung records an increase in orders for its image sensors

Samsung is one of the most powerful companies in the tech world. And in addition to its smartphones, the South Korean brand is also dedicated to the production of a wide range of equipment.

According to now released data, the company has seen an increase in manufacturing orders for its smartphone camera sensors.

Demands for Samsung-made camera sensors are increasing

Samsung is preparing to increase production of its CMOS image sensors (CIS), as industry demands have increased in this direction.

According to a recent report by L’Elec, orders for camera sensors produced by the South Korean brand have increased. And to help increase the manufacturing of this equipment, Samsung will count on the support of its suppliers Tesna and LB Semicon. Both companies will invest in new facilities, which are expected to come into operation in the second half of 2021.

In addition, Nepes Ark, a brand responsible for the manufacture of integrated circuits and TFT-LCD panels, could also help Samsung by accepting certain orders for the manufacture of image sensors.

According to Details, orders for image sensors mainly come from major Chinese smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Realme. These devices are already equipped with Samsung’s popular ISOCELL image sensors.

Note that it is common for the South Korean brand to first launch its image sensors in OEM products, before implementing them in its own equipment. For example, the ISOCELL GN2 sensor debuted with the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra model, and so far not found in any Samsung model.

For this production, Tesna, LB Semicon and Nepes Ark will also relieve Samsung of part of the production of DRAMs. In addition, with the redevelopment of facilities, including the Texas plant, Samsung Foundries will also be able to produce more semiconductors. In this sense, Qualcomm and AMD are grateful because they depend on this production for their equipment.

Samsung wants to catch up with Sony in sensor manufacturing

Currently, Samsung and Sony are two of the largest manufacturers of sensors for mobile devices. However, Sony leads with 46% market share, compared to Samsung’s 29%. This is therefore a difference of 17%. But, according to the information, Samsung intends to reduce this percentage to 10%.
