Samsung is recalling more than 1.2 million ovens after it has been revealed that there is a risk that their front switches could accidentally be activated, which would cause a fire hazard.
In fact, 18 of these fires caused extensive property damage, while approximately 40 injuries were reported. Seven of the fires resulted in the death of pets.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advised consumers to never place, leave, or store objects on top of the hob, as the objects could catch fire if the appliance is accidentally turned on, and urged consumers to contact Samsung to receive a free set of covers for said switches.
As the New York Times reports, the company plans to offer only repairs, not refunds or exchanges. The company will offer free locks and covers to buyers for more than 12 stove models, which ensure that the front buttons remain in the “off” position.
