Samsung has obtained a license from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include a technology to measure obstructive sleep apnea in its various smart devices, most notably the Samsung Galaxy Watch.
According to what the South Korean company announced, the approval of the American authority will make Samsung the first company to obtain this license in the United States, preceded by its rival Apple.
Bloomberg previously reported that Apple intends to include a sleep apnea capture feature on Apple Watch smart watches, but those efforts have been hampered by a lawsuit by the medical company Masimo, according to which the oxygen measurement sensor in the device was deleted. Blood is from the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra, and it is a key element in monitoring the state of breathing during sleep.
The Sleep Apnea monitoring feature will allow Samsung users over the age of 22 who have been diagnosed with this condition to track symptoms by tracking their sleep for at least 4 hours a day, over a period of 10 consecutive days.
Samsung announced that it will add the new feature to a number of its smart watches compatible with its introduction by the third quarter of this year 2024, and it is expected that the “Galaxy Watch 7” will be at the top of the watches that offer the new feature, which is expected to be launched at the annual event to launch the company’s watches. By next August.
The new feature will be available on the Samsung Health Monitor app.
It is noteworthy that 25% of men and a tenth of women in the United States are at risk of developing sleep apnea, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
Samsung indicated that this condition reflects patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and irregular heartbeat.
