Although Samsung has tried to bring its in-house Exynos chip to the same level as competing offerings from Apple and Qualcomm, its efforts have so far failed. Two years ago, the company ditched its Mongoose cores in favor of the ARM design, and its latest flagship chip, the Exynos 2200, features a GPU made in collaboration with AMD.
According to a new report, the South Korean company is planning to shake things up to improve the performance of its in-house processors.
The Korean media Inews24 reports what Samsung plans to develop chipsets exclusively for its smartphones. Source Ice Universe explains that Samsung’s System LSI division, which manufactures the chips, does not have a very close relationship with Samsung’s mobile unit, known as MX or Mobile eXperience.

TM Roh : « We will build processors specifically for the Galaxy »

The two units have more of a buy and sell relationship, which means the MX unit is just another customer for the LSI wing. Besides, Samsung’s chip-making branch not only manufactures chips for Samsung-branded smartphones, but also has other customers like Vivo.
President and head of Samsung’s MX business, TM Roh, apparently said that Samsung was now going to make processors specifically for Galaxy smartphones. This plan was reportedly revealed during a public meeting when an employee asked how the company was going to resolve the Game Optimization Service (GOS) controversy.
Focus on your need
GOS is a pre-installed app on Samsung smartphones and is supposed to prevent the devices from overheating. This is done by limiting performance and Samsung has been criticized for not allowing customers to disable the service. The company then pushed out an update to address this issue, but this whole saga has left a bitter taste in customers’ mouths and there are signs that it has affected demand for the Galaxy S22, which is one of the best Android smartphones of 2022.
The top-end model, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, also suffers from GPS issues, and that only affects Exynos models, not those with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips.
Think of yourself before others
To deal with all of this, Samsung could now take the same approach as Apple to chip manufacturing. This means that she will focus on making chips that meet the needs of its Galaxy smartphones, instead of thinking about selling them to other manufacturers.
It’s also possible that Samsung will team up with Qualcomm or MediaTek to make new chips, but nothing is certain at this time. Samsung has acknowledged internally that its employeeshave insufficient AP capacityand it’s not necessarily because they lack talent, but also because the manpower is insufficient.
