In parallel with MWC, Samsung also talked about several important memory-related developments. The company announced a completely new HBM3E chip, which we mentioned earlier, and was also the world’s first to pull out a microSD card that complies with the SD Express standard.
Samsung SD Express microSD 256GB
SD Express has been around for years, and it’s been a long time since this technology was used in a microSD card, but Samsung says the market needs it. According to the company, the high speed will come in handy with the use of multimedia materials and new AI applications. For now, the product is still in the form of samples, but mass production could begin this year if everything goes according to plan.
In the first round, the microSD card using the SD Express interface was realized with a storage capacity of 256 GB, but more designs can be expected in the future.
The size of 256 gigabytes is not considered particularly large these days, and the interesting situation here is that it will be possible to save all data from the device in seconds. With traditional UHS-1 microSD cards, the maximum available speed is 104 MB/s, while with SD Express, a speed of up to 985 MB/s can be achieved.
Samsung is not using the maximum of the standard yet. The SD Express memory card in microSD format developed by the company promises a continuous reading speed of 800 MB/s. The company emphasized that this is 40 percent more than what can be achieved with SSD drives with a SATA connector, and is several times the transfer speed previously available with SD cards. However, Samsung did not talk so enthusiastically about how the writing speed would develop. The company did not give any indication of what to expect in this regard.

The high speed achieved in addition to the small size means that the card can heat up significantly. That is why Samsung uses Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology for the microSD SD Express card, which will be able to properly protect the card during load without any external devices.
Thanks to the DTG process, the card will always be kept at an optimal temperature. It will prioritize stability even during sustained loading. There was no mention of how the thermal protection will work in practice, but the card will certainly limit the speed to a level where its temperature is already adequate.
Samsung EVO Plus and PRO Plus microSD 1 TB
Samsung also announced two more interesting microSD cards, which already have a storage capacity of 1 TB in addition to the size of a fingernail. We can talk about an EVO Plus and a PRO Plus serial memory card, both of which use the company’s latest eight-layer, 8th generation 1 Tb V-NAND units in the microSD format.

The company did not reveal too much about the performance of the cards, but they are marked U3 and V30, which means that they definitely know the continuous write speed of 30 MB/s, but it can be assumed that the speed of 60 MB/s is already they don’t reach it, because then the V60 mark could appear on them. In addition to these, they also have an A2 rating, so they are suitable for running applications and can fit properly in mobile phones.
Samsung’s 1 TB UHS-1 microSD cards may hit stores in the third quarter.
