‘Samsung comes with 600 megapixel camera’
The reliable tasty Ice Universe claims that Samsung is working on a 600 megapixel sensor. He shares the slide below from an internal presentation on Twitter. This shows that Samsung mainly develops the camera for 4K and 8K video. The high resolution allows users to zoom in while filming with minimal loss of quality.
The camera should be a lot bigger than the 108 megapixel sensor currently in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra in Note 20 Ultra sits. At 1 / 0.57 inch, it would even be larger than the sensor in many premium compact cameras.
Samsung still has a few things to solve. For example, a 600 megapixel camera takes up 12 percent of the back. If you also need an ultra-wide-angle lens and telecamera, you don’t have much space to hold the smartphone.
Another problem is that the camera in its current state is a whopping 22 millimeters thick. As you can see on the slide, that’s not an elegant sight. Moreover, it seems very impractical to put such a device in your pocket. Samsung therefore wants to further develop the 600 megapixel sensor to get rid of the ‘camera bump’.
For now we have to make do with 108 megapixels
So before Samsung really releases a smartphone with a 600 megapixel camera, we are a few years further. For the time being, the Korean manufacturer will stick to the 108 megapixel sensor that debuted in the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The successor of that device, the S21 Ultra, reportedly has one new version of this sensor. The cheaper models, the Galaxy S21 in S21 More, probably have to make do with ‘old-fashioned’ 12 megapixel cameras.
