Samsung is rolling out One UI 2.5 update, how to install it

Samsung has just kicked off the One UI 2.5 update rollout to the Galaxy S20, S20 +, and S20 Ultra, just as the Galaxy Note 20 debuts all over the world. The update is a small evolution of One UI 2.1 and notably introduces the compatibility of gesture navigation of Android 10 with alternative launchers.

It is August 21, 2020, and today is Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra are available internationally after their presentation on August 5. The two smartphones were supposed to be the first to benefit from the new OneUI 2.5 overlay. To our surprise, Samsung has decided to start rolling out the update now on the entire S20 range.

As specified by our colleagues at Sammobile, the firmwares G981BXXU4BTH5, G986BXXU4BTH5 and G988BXXU4BTH5 corresponding respectively to Galaxy 20, S20+ and S20 Ultra are now deployed in Europe, starting with Germany, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands. This should also be the case for France in the coming hours.

One UI 2.5: what’s new?

This new version comes only a few months after One UI 2.1 which was introduced with the Galaxy S20. If the overlay does not change the interface of One UI 2.0, several new features have been introduced on the functional level. We notably discovered the new Quick Share and Music Share sharing options, as well as numerous improvements to the Samsung Camera application.

Without surprise, One UI 2.5 does not add much new, except Android 10 gesture navigation compatibility with alternative launchers. If you are one of those who prefer a third-party launcher rather than the Samsung overlay, it was until now impossible to take advantage of new navigation options by gestures.

If you have a Galaxy S20, S20 +, or S20 Ultra, the OTA notification of an update should arrive in the next few hours if it hasn’t already. Do not hesitate to regularly check its availability by visiting Settings> Software Update> Download and Install. As a reminder, by announcing the passage of its support to three generations of Android a few days ago, Samsung also clarified that the Galaxy S20 will be the first to receive OneUI 3.0 (Android 11) in stable version in the coming weeks.
