The world of connected watches has not particularly evolved in terms of design. There are a few screen formats (round, square or even rectangular), but nothing very innovative in itself. A new patent discovered by LetsGoDigital However, suggests that Samsung would be working on a model with a roll-up screen and a camera, two elements not at all common on connected watches.
A new connected watch format signed by Samsung
While everyone expected an Apple Watch with flat edges this year, no changes have been made to Apple’s smartwatch lineup. The Series 7 simply benefits from a larger screen and faster charging. On the side of Samsung, the design of the Galaxy Watch 4 has not come to revolutionize the genre either. One recent patent from the South Korean firm would however prepare the ground for a new connected watch format.
Revealed by LetsGoDigital, this patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) represents a connected watch with a roll-up screen and a camera in the middle. Pressing the crown of the latter would extend the screen. This would transform the round design of the watch into an oval and allow a 40% larger screen to be taken advantage of.
The images filed via this patent also reveal a new utility that could arrive on this type of Samsung connected watch: watching videos. A visual shows a user watching a video of the superhero Thor from the Marvel Universe. The camera is in the middle of the watch and aims to take photos and videos.
While watching videos seems rather anecdotal, the photo sensor responds to a problem with connected watches marketed until today. These are indeed simple companions of our smartphones. We can’t do everything on it yet, including taking a photo or a video.
It remains to be seen whether these innovations will be comfortable enough to use from our wrist. It should also not be forgotten that like any patent, it could obviously never see the light of day in the form of a product marketed by Samsung.
