Samsung is considering offering a larger external display

A patent filed by Samsung allows to discover the design envisaged for a successor to the Galaxy Z Flip. The smartphone could take advantage of three cameras – instead of two – on the back, as well as a larger external screen than the first model.

Last February, during the presentation of Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra, the Korean manufacturer also presented its second smartphone with a foldable screen, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Contrary to Galaxy Fold, it took advantage of a horizontal fold to close vertically, like a flip smartphone. However, if the smartphone did take advantage of a second screen outside, it was particularly small.

It now seems that Samsung is working on the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip. This is in any case what the Dutch site LetsGoDigital was able to spot in a patent published in March 28 with the world office of intellectual property. This patent makes it possible to discover the diagrams of two different smartphones, a model “A” which greatly resembles the Galaxy Z Flip, and a model “B” with some slight modifications.

Three cameras envisaged on the back

In both cases, a major difference should be noted with the Galaxy Z Flip. Indeed, the two diagrams present a telephone equipped not with two cameras on the back, but with three separate lenses. It is in this context that we can see the main difference between the two Samsung proposals. If version A uses the same location for the camera, positioned horizontally at the top left, Proposition B places them vertically.

One way for Samsung to potentially save some space in order to expand the external display. It must be said that this was one of the main criticisms of the Galaxy Z Flip. “If you receive a long message, you probably will not have time to read the whole thing, because the scrolling is slow and the external screen goes to sleep after a few seconds”we wrote in our Galaxy Z Flip review. It would not be a question of offering a large screen as is the case with the Galaxy Fold, but simply a slightly larger secondary display, allowing to display longer messages or notifications.

For the time being, however, this is only a patent filed by Samsung. If the track therefore seems studied by the Korean manufacturer, there is no indication that it is finally validated for the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip. If the firm keeps its current calendar, the smartphone could be presented at the beginning of 2021, at the same time as the future Galaxy S30.
