Samsung introduces the world’s first 12nm DDR5 memory: faster, more efficient, and smaller than ever before

Samsung electronics reported on the development of the industry’s first 12nm-class DDR5 DRAM. The new memory will help drive next-generation computing, data centers and AI applications. All of this ensures the new memory’s industry-leading performance, increased power efficiency, and smaller die size, which will increase the chip yield from each wafer.

The 12nm DDR5 memory chip is a 16Gb chip. The data exchange rate for each contact is 7.2 Gbps. With such a speed, processing by one chip out of two 4K-30GB movies will only take a second. At the same time, memory consumption at 12nm is reduced by 23% compared to previous generation memory, which will be very noticeable on typically huge memory arrays for AI, machine learning and big data applications.

Importantly, the decrease in the technical process of manufacturing memory and, accordingly, the decrease in the physical size of each memory cell did not lead to an increase in read and write errors. Helped in this new material with a high dielectric constant (high κ), which prevents charge leakage from the cell. Samsung also talks about the use of some patented design technologies that improve the performance of critical circuits.

Overall, the company is preparing to release the industry’s highest storage density DDR5 memory. Therefore, the matter could not have been resolved without the use of EUV scanners. “Deep Ultraviolet” finally entered the computer memory business. As a result, Samsung will be able to get 20% more chips per silicon wafer than before. The company will start mass production of 12nm DDR5 chips in 2023. Compatibility with AMD processors has already been checked, confirmed by the company’s managers.

“Innovation often requires close collaboration with industry partners to push the boundaries of technology, said Joe Macri, senior vice president, corporate scientist and CTO of AMD Computing and Graphics. “We are very excited to collaborate again with Samsung, especially with the release of optimized and validated DDR5 memory products on the ‘Zen’ platforms.”
