SEOUL, 15 Feb. (Yonhap) – Samsung Heavy Industries on Monday announced that it had signed a 781 billion won ($ 707 million) contract to build five container ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

As part of the deal with an Asian company, the 15,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent) container ships will be delivered by July 2023, Samsung Heavy Industries said in an emailed statement.

The shipbuilder did not disclose the name of the buyer.

“This year is expected to see an increase in new orders for green container ships thanks to the growing demand for the replacement of old ships,” said Samsung Heavy Industries.

The firm has booked orders worth $ 1.3 billion, or 10 ships, including nine container ships, so far this year.

The order amount represents 17% of the shipbuilder’s target for 2021, worth $ 7.8 billion, 42% more than its $ 5.5 billion in orders in 2020.

Samsung Heavy Industries stock on the Seoul Stock Exchange rose 2.78% to 6,660 won at 9.49am.
