Samsung has announced a new sensor for 200-megapixel smartphones called the ISOCELL HP3. According to the manufacturer, the module has the smallest pixels in the industry, with a physical pixel size of just 0.56 μm, 12 percent smaller than its predecessor, the HP1. The fresh module also promises a new kind of autofocus and even clearer HDR.
Samsung ISOCELL HP3 debuted 9 months after the unveiling of the first 200-megapixel module designed for smartphones, the ISOCELL HP1that we haven’t seen on the back of any mobile since. However, development could not stop, and the South Korean manufacturer has since successfully reduced the pixel size from 0.64 μm to the 0.56 μm already mentioned. As a result, the new camera sensor has become 1 / 1.4-inch, roughly 20 percent smaller than its predecessor (1 / 1.22-inch).
4: 1 pixel merging results in 1.12 μm pixels at 50 megapixel resolution. And for photos taken in really low light conditions, 16: 1 merging is also ensured, which means huge, effective pixels of 2.24 μm and capture of 12.5 megapixels.
One of the most promoted innovations of the Samsung ISOCELL HP3 is the Super-QPD autofocus solution. As a result, each pixel has a separate autofocus capability and each group of four has a common lens that can identify horizontal and vertical phase differences. And when it comes to capturing movies, Samsung’s new sensor can capture 8K videos per second and up to 120 fps at 4K, with minimal loss of field of view, at least according to the manufacturer.
The Smart-ISO Pro function has also been improved, and is now able to combine information from three different phases, low, medium and high ISO mode, thus increasing HDR performance. The Samsung ISOCELL HP3 supports 14-bit color depth, which means it can capture 64 times more colors than its predecessor.
Samsung, if all goes well, is ready to provide samples of the sensor to its partners, and mass production of the module is expected to begin later this year.
Incidentally, it is rumored that there will be a 200-megapixel image capture unit on the back of next year’s Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it is reported that this will not be the HP3 just introduced.
