Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5: The Future of Flexible Displays Unveiled at MWC 2024

Let us at least quickly remind you that Samsung has been using flexible displays for the past few years in its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip smartphones. The ability to fold the phone brings completely different possibilities of use in both cases.

The models from the Fold product line represent powerful work machines, which, however, retain relatively compact dimensions thanks to the external display. When you need a larger work surface, simply open the phone and use the second screen hidden inside, essentially getting a positionable tablet. This is exactly how the latest Galax Z Fold5, which has been on store shelves since last year, also works.

Smartphones from the Z Flip product line, compared to their bigger brother, use a foldable design so that they don’t take up as much space in your pocket. For example, the latest Galaxy Z Flip5 basically has the dimensions of a classic smartphone, but you can fold it in half.

Considering how smartphone displays are getting bigger every year, this solution is very practical. You no longer have to bother with the corner of your phone sticking out of your pocket, with which you bump into various obstacles several times a day. Flip5 fits easily even in really small pockets.

But the possibilities of flexible screens are much wider, as the South Korean Samsung showed just at the MWC 2024 trade fair. We are talking, for example, about the Flex In & Out concept, which builds on the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold models described above, but allows the screen to be bent to both parties, which has not been possible until now.

The current generation of flexible displays folds exclusively inwards, so when folded, the flexible screen is perfectly protected against damage. Newly, however, the displays could also be tilted outwards, thanks to which you could use part of the display as a stand, or change the size of the device and use only part of the touchscreen.

The concept of the Galaxy Z Flip model also looks very interesting, where the internal display smoothly transitions to one of the sides of the phone. Thanks to this, you can see key information and notifications even when closed.

Also on display was a concept phone that uses a flexible screen to wrap around the hand.

The Chinese company Motorola also demonstrated a very similar prototype at the MWC 2024 fair. The phone has a flexible screen and a partially flexible back. Thanks to this, it can be shaped into different shapes according to the needs of the user. The bent part can thus serve as a stand when you need to have the phone on the table, or you can literally wrap it around your hand, as seen in the video below.

For music fans

If you watched the video at the beginning of the article or the gallery below, you probably didn’t miss that the possibilities of flexible screens are much wider. For example, Samsung presented the use of Bluetooth speakers.

When you need to carry it, the display automatically bends exactly according to the body of the device so that it does not get in the way in a backpack or purse. Only when you really want to use it will it stand up and show itself in all its glory. You can then display information about the songs being played or even video clips on it.

How OLED screens can transform electronics was also presented by the South Korean electronic giant on wireless chips. He placed a small display on their case, thanks to which users can accurately see the state of the battery and other important information.

However, all the novelties described above are just prototypes for now, and at the moment it is not clear when or if they will ever go on sale.
