Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 to Feature Built-in S-Pen Storage, Patent Reveals
Samsung is set to make a critical change to the design of its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6, according to recently leaked documents. The company has been working on a cheaper “Fan Edition” of the Galaxy Z Fold range, which was rumored to drop support for the S-Pen digital stylus. However, the latest leaks suggest that not only will the Galaxy Z Fold 6 continue to support the S-Pen, but it will also feature its own built-in storage slot.
Previously, users had to carry the S-Pen separately, which made it easier to lose and more challenging to use in situations that require quick responses. With the addition of a storage compartment, Samsung aims to address this issue and provide a more convenient solution for users.
This new feature will also create a clear distinction between the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the potential Z Fold 6 FE (Fan Edition). By offering built-in S-Pen storage in the flagship model, Samsung positions it as a device more suitable for business purposes, while the FE version can be marketed as a consumer variant.
The details of these changes were revealed in a recently granted patent award to Samsung titled “Electronic Device Including Flexible Display.” The patent addresses one of the main concerns with foldable smartphones – their bulkiness compared to standard form factor devices, especially when closed.
The patent introduces a thinner hinge assembly compared to the current hinges on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This not only reduces the overall thickness of the device but also addresses the strain that can be placed on a foldable device through a detent-styled hinge. The detents allow the device to have several fixed positions as it moves through its arc of travel.
If Samsung implements this design in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, users can expect preferred positions such as a fully flat position when open, a 90-degree corner to match Samsung’s marketing materials, and possibly a 120-degree angle for comfortable multimedia viewing. These detents will also help reduce strain between the two sides of the device.
The patent illustrations also reveal a departure from the current design of the Galaxy Z Fold devices. Instead of the tall and narrow form factor when closed, the cover screen is wider and shorter, resembling Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy A handsets. This move towards a more regular phone form factor is crucial in normalizing foldable devices and increasing their adoption.
While it’s important to note that not all features seen in patents make it to consumer hardware, it is highly likely that many of the techniques showcased in the patent, particularly the hinge assembly, will be incorporated into the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung is also working on another folding phone, the Z Flip 6, which is set to be released in 2024.
