The selfie camera. The thing just keeps getting in the way. Usually to the disadvantage of the screen. Manufacturers are increasingly successful in making it as small as possible. For example, the bar was exchanged for a notch, and the notch was exchanged for a screen hole. But there is still room for improvement, according to Samsung. It’s time for the big disappearing trick!
A screen where the selfie camera is behind. It sounds like magic, but we’ve already seen working prototypes. The screen goes out around the camera allowing the camera to do its thing. Oppo and Xiaomi already showed how such a thing works in 2019. Yet it is Samsung that takes the credit. So it seems because according to rumors is the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 the first consumer phone to have it.
Example of Xiaomi’s 3rd generation Under Display screen technology
Samsung has been working on the technology for years but has never found it good enough to be mass-produced. An Under-Display camera follows the Infinity-U, Infinity-V and Infinity-O. These are screens with a U and V-shaped notch, respectively, with a round screen hole at the end. The next step is no more notch or cutout at all. Samsung previously called this ‘New Infinity’. The entire front of a telephone then consists of a screen. Sensors such as ambient light and proximity have already been successfully placed behind the screen. It goes without saying that Samsung is the first to apply the technology to a high-end flagship. The With Fold3 is then the most logical candidate.
New Infinity Display
Now it must be said that the Z Fold 3 is not the first with a New Infinity display, the A80 preceded him. But there the main camera acted as a selfie camera by tilting up and forward. At the Fold 3 the selfie camera is behind the screen. A disadvantage is that the camera has to look through the screen layer, which will not benefit the image quality. Samsung may have now found enough ways to make this acceptable.
A launch is not expected until the third quarter of 2021. If you can’t wait that long, you can consider the ZTE Axon 20 5G. It already has an Under-Display selfie camera. One small drawback; the device has only been announced for the Chinese market.
