Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Takes the Lead Over Z Fold 5 in Pre-Orders – Will it Boost Samsung’s Financial Results?

Will sales of flexible phones improve future financial results?

Pre-orders for the recently introduced flexible smartphones Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 end today, you can get them in regular sales starting tomorrow, but you won’t get any of the pre-order bonuses. The Korean giant seems to have hit the customers’ fancy with the new jigsaw puzzles, because at least in their home country of South Korea, they sell better than the previous generation.

Flip defeats Fold by a landslide

Korea’s Yonhap News reported this week that 1.02 million customers have pre-ordered the new puzzles in their home country of South Korea. This is a slight increase compared to the previous generation, Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 were pre-ordered by 970 thousand Koreans during the same period last year.

Larger pre-sales are undoubtedly pleasing to Samsung, on the other hand, the fact that the star of pre-sales has become the clamshell Z Flip 5 can be a little disappointing. But it is understandable – it is cheaper, and it also brings more intergenerational improvements than its bigger and more expensive brother. In last year’s generation, the ratio of sales between the two jigsaws was 60:40, this year it is said to be 70:30 in favor of the Flip. This means that while Flip pre-sales have grown, Samsung’s Fold has seen an intergenerational decline. At the same time, the Korean manufacturer revealed a ratio of roughly 65:35 before the start of pre-sales.

The head of Samsung’s mobile division TM Roh recently came up with a prediction that sales of flexible smartphones will shoot up by 50 percent this year – Samsung alone wants to sell 30 million units by the end of this year. In this light, the pre-order data must be disappointing for the Korean company, as the number of units in South Korea increased by only 5 percent. It’s possible that the numbers are better in other markets, but we don’t have any official information from Samsung (yet).

In any case, the success of flexible phone sales is very important for Samsung, because according to the latest financial results, Samsung Electronics is not doing very well – in the last quarter, its profit fell by 95 percent year-on-year and it just barely stayed in the black.
