Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 – A foldable mobile phone will open more

The latest incarnation of Samsung’s mobile phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, is a small update that makes the phone relevant in 2022, but otherwise not much has happened since. last year’s model. OR the model of the previous year for this reason.

Samsung has two foldable mobile phones in its range. In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 there is Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it should be noted that the foldable screen is pretty much the only thing the two phones have in common. Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a flagship product, a hybrid between mobile and tablet and suitable for professional users, while Galaxy Z Flip 4 should tempt the young and the creative. That is, those who spend more time on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram than on spreadsheets and project management.

This is probably why the Samsung mobile tablet is available in a so-called Bespoke edition, i.e. a bespoke edition, so that you can choose your own design. The frame is available in silver, gold or black and you can choose from five different colors for the front and back respectively (yellow, white, blue, green and red). The colors can then be combined in a total of 75 different ways and Samsung also offers a special “Bespoke Upgrade Care”, so that the user can subsequently change the color of the mobile.

In other words, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is perhaps primarily a mobile phone for those who value design and style as much as performance and functions. And then, as I said, it doesn’t hurt if you’re a real or aspiring influencer, because the mobile device form factor offers a couple of unique opportunities when filming yourself and others. We will come back to this.

Appearance and construction

If we start by looking at the physical appearance of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it looks a bit like its two predecessors. Folded, it also fits in a shirt pocket and the weight has been reduced to 187 grams. Gorilla Glass Victus protects your mobile phone and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is IPX8 certified and therefore water resistant to 1.5 meters. However, we don’t exactly recommend taking the boardmobile to the beach. Also because the hinges ensure that the phone is not protected from dust and sand.

As a laptop, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can remain open from virtually any angle. This makes the hinge so “durable” that it can be difficult to open and close the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with a single hand movement at first, which is otherwise one of the great features of a foldable phone, which with a little practice is just fine. However, forget to open and close the phone as quickly as the clamshell phones of the 90s, which popped up as quickly as a spring knife!

It should also be remembered that this year the Samsung mobile tablet is available in Bora Purple, Blue, Pink Gold and Graphite colors. And furthermore, it is the aforementioned bespoke edition that can make the Galaxy Z Flip 4 the most colorful mobile phone on the market.

Screen

Like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch front screen. The small screen allows the user to answer phone calls (unlike last year, you can also choose three contacts to call directly from the front screen) or switch between songs in your favorite music app without opening the phone, and some apps also support continuity app, so go directly to the relevant app if you open your mobile after clicking on it via the front screen. This applies, among other things, to the dictaphone function.

The foldable main screen is the same size (6.7 inches) and has the same resolution (FHD +) and extremely stretched aspect ratio (22: 9) as the Galaxy Z Flip 3, plus a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. And as we know, this means that the user experience will be faster and smoother.

Samsung offers flexibility to the user by also allowing the viewfinder to be located in the lower half of the screen, while the icons and controls remain at the top. But as a starting point, the viewfinder is at the top, as shown here in the photo. (Photo: Peter Gottschalk)

The screen itself is made with so-called Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which is a kind of glass alloy with a thin layer of plastic as a protective layer and flexible glass underneath.

It doesn’t really look like real glass, and the soft material also means you can see a physical crease running through the screen, even when it’s open.

Camera

Actually, I shouldn’t write a word on the camera, as it has hardly changed since the first Galaxy Z Flip. But let me recap the most important points for those who don’t mind reading the first two tests:

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is certainly not the best camera on the market, with two lenses, both 12 megapixels (respectively wide-angle with optical image stabilization and 123-degree ultra-wide angle) and the HDR10 + video recording option, the camera is mostly identical to the installed camera module Samsung Galaxy S9 since the beginning of 2018, even if it has to do without, among other things, the optical zoom.

Samsung rightly points out that the camera has been upgraded with a sensor that should be 65% brighter than before, and it is also true that the sensor itself has become larger (1 / 1.76 “compared to the previous 1 / 2.55”), in the in the same way that the pixel size has increased from 1.4 µm to 1.8 µm. But that only means that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 now has the same sensor and pixel size as, say, the two-year-old. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

The smartest thing is the form factor of the mobile itself. Especially the front screen, which can act as a camera display where you can see what you are photographing or filming. This makes it super easy to take really nice pictures of yourself with your phone’s main camera, for example using the self-timer. As mentioned, great for aspiring influencers and others who depend on social media.

Another useful detail is the small changes to the camera app, which Samsung has made to take advantage of the tablet’s form factor. Already with the first Galaxy Z Flip, for example, you can move icons in the camera app from the top of the screen to the bottom when you’ve left the flip phone half-open to take selfies. So the viewfinder would be in the upper half of the screen, while all operations took place in the lower half.

With the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it’s also possible that the viewfinder is in the lower half of the screen, while the icons and controls remain at the top.

Performance and features

The most significant update of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is that the tablet has been equipped with Qualcomm’s latest and fastest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Additionally, there are 8 gigabytes of memory, as well as 128 (as in our test sample), 256, or 512 gigabytes of built-in storage, which cannot be expanded.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is the same processor as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, and when it comes to speed and pace, the Z Flip 4 is as fast or as fast as its foldable colleague, as our benchmark results also testify.

Just like its predecessor, the mobile card is equipped with two lenses, both 12-megapixel (123-degree wide-angle and wide-angle with optical image stabilization, respectively). (Photo: Peter Gottschalk)

The only serious sticking point that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 unfortunately has in common with its predecessor: although the battery has even gotten bigger, or 3700 mAh versus the 3300 mAh of the predecessor, the mobile really struggles to withstand intense use during a whole day.

Our benchmark test, which stresses the battery as much as possible, showed a result of only four hours and 37 minutes, which is definitely negative. In fact, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 fares even worse than its predecessor, which achieved a result of over five hours in the same test.

After all, poor battery life is such a big problem that it ends up greatly reducing our overall rating.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has naturally been tweaked here and there compared to its predecessor. Samsung’s latest mobile card is equipped with, among other things, Android 12 and Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. It is unlikely to be faster and more up to date at the time of writing.

But it’s also more expensive, and even though the camera has a larger sensor, it’s in all other respects identical to the camera in the first 2020 Galaxy Z Flip. Plus, the battery life is worse than ever.

Obviously, the Galaxy Flip Z 4 is a fun mobile that you can customize almost to your liking in terms of design and the special format of the card gives the user some creative possibilities that few other mobiles on the market can match.

But that’s not enough. We awarded the first two Galaxy Z Flip models our second highest rating and the first edition also received our special recommendation. However, the mobile market is constantly developing, and in 2022 we don’t think the relatively small improvements over last year’s model are enough for this year’s Galaxy Z Flip edition to deserve the same rating.
