Satellite communication is one of the great strengths of the iPhone
The biggest competitor from South Korea also wants to offer this function
A high-ranking representative of the company has now confirmed the arrival of satellite communication
Last year, when Apple introduced the option of emergency satellite communication within its iPhone, it was a rather groundbreaking feature that can save your bare life in a critical situation. It is therefore not surprising that the competition also wants to come up with a similar gadget. The most serious from South Korea has already started working on satellite communication for its flagship models, at least that’s how it was speculated until now. Now, Samsung has finally made an official statement through the mouth of System LSI division president Park Yong-in.
Satellite communication for Galaxy S24 is confirmed
He confirmed at this year’s Semiconductor Expo that devices from the Galaxy family will support satellite communications starting next year. Although he did not say which specific devices it will be, there is no doubt that Samsung will reserve this function mainly for its most expensive phones from the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, which should be presented to the public early next year. Park Yong-in hinted indirectly that the Exynos 5300 supports two-way communication with satellite systems.
Support for satellite communications may have one potential catch, however. Given that Samsung apparently provided this function mainly for its own modems, it is therefore not certain whether all phones from the Galaxy S24 family will have satellite communication. If the speculations that indicate the different use of chipsets in different markets within the flagship series are confirmed, the models with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 might not get satellite communication.
Don’t overlook
Satellite communication from Samsung is not just about SOS messages. It can also stream video
The technology from Samsung is built on 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks), which can secure two-way satellite communication. The usability of this technology is not limited to SOS as in the case of Apple, but in theory it can also stream video in high definition. Samsung is counting on this technology not only for smartphones, but also for other devices, including flying cars and drones. Qualcomm is also developing a similar technology called Snapdragon Satellite, but it is questionable whether it will be able to appear in the Galaxy S24 series together with the solution from Samsung.
