Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone met S Pen camera

Samsung patents full screen Galaxy Note smartphone with detachable camera. Can be used as a pop-up camera or remote camera with gesture control.

The South Korean Samsung annually releases a large number of smartphones on the market. Recently, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 on Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable smartphones released. However, one smartphone will be missing this year; the Galaxy Note 21. Some even believe that no new Note will appear at all, although Samsung firmly denies this for the time being.

In any case, the S Pen will continue to exist, now also the S21 Ultra and Z Fold 3 are made compatible with Samsung’s acclaimed stylus pen. In addition, it seems that Samsung is still exploring new possibilities for a removable stylus. This is evident from a new patent that Samsung has applied for for a rod-shaped removable camera that also has a nib for writing – just like with the S Pen.

Recently LetsGoDigital reported on a I live smartphone with a removable camera. Samsung’s design is just as innovative and above all a lot more versatile.

Samsung Note smartphone with detachable camera

This is a brand new patent that Samsung Electronics has filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization on March 5, 2021. The documentation, titled “Portable terminal including separable camera,” was released on September 10, 2021.

At first glance, it seems to be a normal high-end Samsung smartphone, with a beautiful full screen design and rounded screen edges. A triple camera is placed on the back, with a similar camera design as the Galaxy Z Fold 3. There is no selfie camera visible, Samsung has come up with something ingenious for this.

This Samsung smartphone has a detachable camera system that is the size of the S Pen. The removable camera system can be inserted and removed at the top left of the device. Magnets prevent it from falling out of the housing.

The detachable system includes a camera, microphone and shutter release button. Optionally, a second or more cameras can be added – with different lenses, each with a different viewing angle and aperture – such as an ultra-wide angle lens and/or a telephoto lens.

As mentioned, the elongated device can optionally also be equipped with a nib – so it could replace the S Pen. Samsung has clearly thought of everything with this versatile device.

Thanks to the rod-shaped design, you can easily hold the device in your hand, as a selfie stick, to take photo and video recordings from various angles. There is also a small clip built in, which makes it possible to place the device independently. This also makes it possible to take pictures from a distance.

Being a detachable camera, the user is free to choose any composition they want – opening up new creative possibilities for shooting from different angles. The remote shooting option also makes it easier to capture everyone – including the photographer. Fun at parties or at a meeting with friends or family, where often one person is missing in the photo. In addition, it is of course an ideal recording tool for vloggers.

The unique thing about Samsung’s design is that the removable camera also works when it is stored in the housing. In that case, it acts as a pop-up camera for taking selfies.

So there are three possibilities. 1. The system is completely inside the housing. 2. The front camera is activated, after which the pop-up camera rises from the housing. 3. The user takes the whole camera system out of the housing to take pictures from a distance and from different angles.

The removable camera system remains connected to the smartphone via WiFi, Bluetooth or NFC. Operation is via the camera interface that is displayed on the smartphone screen – as shown in the patent image above.

When the camera system has been removed from the housing, a preview of the photos taken is shown on the screen. It is even possible to switch between the available cameras – on the back of the device and on the detachable device. For example, you can operate the camera on the back of the device via the S Pen camera. Optionally, you can simultaneously capture a second perspective, with the removable camera, allowing you to capture a picture-in-picture.

Finally, the removable camera is also equipped with a motion sensor, to be able to detect movements. This creates additional operating options. Several Air Gestures are mentioned. For example, it should be possible to stop a video recording by moving the device from left to right. It is also recognized when you move the device up and down, up and down, or from front to back.

It is an ingenious invention by Samsung. Several manufacturers currently seem to be working on creating solutions to enable remote photography with a smartphone. Samsung knows how to shape the removable camera in such a way that it can also function as a pop-up camera. In this way a full screen design can be created, without the use of an under display camera.

In addition, Samsung seems to see possibilities to also add a nib, making it a particularly versatile device. Certainly combined with the new control functions, which opens up numerous creative possibilities.

Samsung continues to work in the background to develop new innovative features. Regardless of whether or not the company will have new ones next year Galaxy Note 22 will release, it will continue to use the knowledge it already has to develop new products.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the recent trademark issue. The trademark registrations for ‘Galaxy Note’ and ‘Samsung Galaxy Note‘ are still up to 3 april 2023 valid. In that regard, there is as yet no immediate reason for renewal.
