Samsung Galaxy A51 preview: success number updated

Samsung recently announced its new Galaxy A line, of which the Samsung Galaxy A51 is undoubtedly the most popular. Time to see if the Galaxy A51 is just as impressive as the A50 from early 2019.

Although the Samsung Galaxy A51 international already was announced, Samsung Netherlands has not yet announced whether it will be released in our country. However, we cannot imagine that this is not the case: the A50 was a great success on the Dutch market. Enough reason to test the new Galaxy A51.

Modernized design

Without a doubt the biggest upgrade to the Galaxy A51 is the design. That has, entirely in the style of the Note 10 series, a screen with particularly small edges. There is a hole in the top center for the selfie camera, which is impressively small for a middle class. This gives the A51 a sleek and modern-looking design.

What also contributes to this is the fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the screen. That is probably a bit slower than a traditional one on the back, but due to the lack of such a scanner on the back it looks nice and tight. The back itself is also very special: it has a sort of triangle pattern in it. The black and white variant of the A51 reflect light in a kind of rainbow pattern and that also looks good.

I think it’s a shame that the A51, just like its predecessor, is made entirely of plastic. Although the finish is such that the looks are the same as those of a smartphone made of metal and glass, it clearly feels cheaper. If you use a cover, you hardly notice it anymore.

Even more cameras

On the back of the Galaxy A51 are four cameras: a 48-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. That is, in addition to the design, the second major upgrade of the Samsung Galaxy A51.

Although I cannot yet make a definitive qualitative assessment of the cameras, I can already tell you that it looks good at first sight. Anyway, the addition of a wide-angle camera is fine, and even the 5-megapixel macro camera is fine. Last year we mainly saw macro cameras that were of relatively poor quality, but the first close-ups I shot with the A51 look okay.

The depth sensor is not very useful; devices without such a sensor nowadays also have a nice portrait mode. The main camera takes 12-megapixel photos as standard and they look nice and detailed at first glance. Samsung’s image processing is relatively good anyway, you will undoubtedly see that again in the form of beautiful colors and a high dynamic range.

Trusted basis

Apart from the two points mentioned above, the basis of the Galaxy A51 is especially well known. The smartphone has an Exynos 9611 chipset, 4 GB or 6 GB memory and a 4000 mAh battery. That chip has been upgraded slightly compared to the Galaxy A50 chip: according to Samsung it is a bit faster and has a bit more image processing power for the camera.

The differences in the chipset are nevertheless small. Although the Galaxy A51 did not feel slow at my first meeting, that is bad news. The performance of the Galaxy A50 was not you-of-it compared to its competitors, so I expect that the Galaxy A51 will be a bit tricky in that area in 2020. It will be sufficient for daily use, but if you really want a fast smartphone, I think you should look further.

The One UI software from Samsung, which in this case is on top of Android 10, is pleasant to use. It looks good, has some useful added functions and will be a nice addition to many Android 10 for many people.

Samsung Galaxy A51 preview conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a logical successor to the Samsung Galaxy A50, which has largely the same strengths. That means: a beautiful and modern design, an extensive camera and a beautiful screen. That was a formula for success last year, and it seems to me that with the Galaxy A51 in 2020 it will be no different.

The only caveat I have with the device is that the performance will probably lag behind the rest of the market. The A50 was not the fastest; It is a shame that the A51 was almost not updated a year later. On the other hand: Samsung is not going to win the race for the best specifications for little money, and it is sufficient for fast operation in practice.

Do you attach great value to a beautiful design, an extensive camera or a beautiful display? Or do you just think it is important that your smartphone comes from a trusted brand? Then the Samsung Galaxy A51 at first glance an excellent choice. That of course also depends a bit on the price, but unfortunately I can’t tell you anything about it yet. To be continued…
