Compared to the third quarter of 2023, sales increased by 0.56%, operating profit increased by 16.07%, and net profit increased by 8.57%.
In 2023, it recorded sales of 258.9355 trillion won, operating profit of 6.567 trillion won, and net profit of 15.4871 trillion won. Compared to 2022, sales decreased by 14.33%, operating profit by 84.86%, and net profit by 72.17%.
In the fourth quarter of last year, smartphone shipments decreased as competition during the year-end peak season intensified, but company-wide sales increased compared to the previous quarter due to rising memory prices and strong sales of display premium products.
Operating profit increased by about KRW 390 billion compared to the previous quarter as competition for set products intensified and the effectiveness of flagship smartphone launches decreased, memory performance improved significantly and display performance continued to improve.
Last year’s fourth quarter research and development expenses recorded 7.55 trillion won, the highest ever in a quarter.
The DS division, which handles semiconductors, posted sales of 21.69 trillion won and an operating loss of 2.18 trillion won.
Memory showed an overall recovery in demand as customer inventories normalized, memory loading in PC and mobile products increased, and demand for generative artificial intelligence (AI) servers increased. The DRAM business division is estimated to have turned profitable for the first time in four quarters.
The DX division, which includes smartphones and home appliances, recorded sales of 39.55 trillion won and operating profit of 2.62 trillion won.
In the fourth quarter, smartphone sales decreased as the effect of new model launches slowed. However, tablet product shipments increased mainly due to premium new products, and wearable products also maintained solid sales by taking advantage of the year-end peak season.
Harman’s sales increased due to increased sales of consumer audio products during the peak season, and growth continued on an annual basis compared to the previous year.
In the case of small and medium-sized panels, Display achieved solid performance by responding in a timely manner to new products from major customers and expanding the proportion of high-end products. In the case of large-sized products, weak demand continued due to the economic downturn, but sales increased and deficits eased due to increased TV sales during the year-end peak season.
Samsung Electronics said, “In the first quarter of this year, while the IT market is gradually recovering, we plan to improve profitability by expanding sales of high value-added products,” and added, “Although it is the off-season for the DS division, we will focus on expanding demand for cutting-edge products and generative AI, and the DX division will focus on increasing demand for AI products.” “We plan to focus on strengthening AI functions such as smartphones and expanding sales of strategic products,” he said.
