NKRIKU, Jakarta – When the foldable phone was released, there were doubts as to whether it would run smoothly in the market given the fragility of its fledgling technology and high cost. The problems that arose with the first-generation Samsung Galaxy Z Fold didn’t help, it even raised doubts about the phone’s capabilities.
However, now it turns out that this futuristic design phone model seems to be starting to look quite good in the market, even exceeding expectations. A research report published by display agency DSCC shows that in the third quarter of this year, total shipments of foldable phones increased by 215 percent month-on-month and 480 percent year-on-year.
Interestingly, in terms of brands, Samsung shipments accounted for a staggering 93 percent of market share, while Huawei shipments accounted for 6 percent. DSCC projects that shipments of folding screen phones will increase from 2.6 million units to 4 million units in the fourth quarter of this year.
The company also projects shipments to increase to 20 million units next year, although the market is expected to register less than 10 million units in shipments this year. In terms of models, the most popular folding phone is the Galaxy Z Flip 3, followed by the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and from Huawei there is the Mate X2 4G version, and the 5G version is ranked fourth or fifth.
It’s worth mentioning that Huawei is reportedly working on a new Mate series foldable phone. Models that will sport a flip design such as the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Motorola Razr 5G are expected to launch in December. This model will be cheaper and will increase Huawei’s market share when it goes on sale.
